Echostar-Directv merger destoryed

http://www.pcworld.com/news/article/...101002X,00.asp

I, for one, wanted the merger. It would have helped people that could not get highspeed internet access to get it. It would have helped to keep the subscription prices low, although they are still lower than most cable companies. The merger gave echostar more muscle in negotiations w/ network providers. It could have added more channels to all of us.

what does destoried mean?

Mac_forever 10-12-2002 12:51 AM

my mistake i meant destoryed. Sorry for any confusion.

oh ok
could u perhaps edit the topic?

yes merges can mean good things but also can mean bad things
less competitions = higher price + monopoly

Have u seen the prices for cable and satellite. Satellite is cheaper than cable. Even when there is two, both are still cheaper than cable. Now if they were combined they could compete with their main competitors Cable.

i want a cable descrambler
but do cable scramblers work on digital cable also?

Mac_forever 10-14-2002 12:40 AM

some might work on digital cable, but I should warn you that cable companies at times test each cable box to see if it is their kind and otehr things. If it is not it will be sent a message and it will make the descrambler useless.

eviltechie 10-14-2002 01:46 AM

sorry i lost you when u said "will be sent a message and..."

what do you mean send a msg?
where from? where to?
and where do they do the testing?

cable descramblers are client sided and cannot be detected on the cable node site

and they cant come into my house if i say no

Mac_forever 10-14-2002 11:59 PM

the cable companies want to make sure that you are using their boxes and that they are not tampered with. So what they do is send a message to ur box asking a few questions and the box sends back the answers to the company. If the box is not theirs or it is tampered with they send a destory command. That command fries your box, making it useless. Directtv did it and fried the illegal smart cards. I have heard of cable companies do that too.
Of course if u don't want them to come in, that is your right.
