Graphics chipmaker Nvidia still on top
"Graphics chipmaker Nvidia has managed to continue gaining market share against rival ATI, despite delays in launching its speedy new processor, a report says.
A Mercury Research report, released this week, found that in the third quarter of 2002 Nvidia's market share rose to 58 percent, from 56 percent the previous quarter. ATI lost market share, shrinking from 36 percent in the second quarter to 33 percent in the third, despite selling the highest-performing graphics chip. The report looked at worldwide shipments of standalone graphics controllers." c|net news |
Oh well :) Thought that would help ati, looks like it did not *LOL* still a really good card though!

Selling the most expensive product don't help the bottom line either. It's the eggs in the basket deal - ATI needs to sell to the poor and middle class instead of only the rich. (Figuratively speaking)
Who in there right mind would shell out 400 bucks for a card that only does one thing better than the nearest competitor that's 25 to 75 percent cheaper? (Not someone you would want holding your money for ya that's for sure) But then again, ATI may be saying "there's a sucker born every minute" on the way to the bank. And from the looks of it, they may be right. 8) |
Naw dude I do not agree :) you can pick up a 9700 pro on e-bay for around $300 and in my local stores for around $340, when the 4600 ti came out I seem to remeber prices starting in the stores at $399+ especially the winfast cards *LOL* Also how did ya come up with $300 cheaper..?? I get around $100 bones cheaper than my 4600ti. that I purchased on a really good deal. In the stores the 4600's are still going for $249.99-$300!! so if your not a bargain shopper and just want what is ont he shelf you going to be paying so close tot he 9700pro prices why not just go with it! I am a huge nvidia fan but still have to give the crown to the king and those 1-2 things the 9700pro does allot better, and I mean ALLOT better I atually use! Most all my games I run fsaa at at least 4x so it would really help going to it, to bad I shelled out the extra cash for my xms pc3500 ram or I would have sold my 4600 to upgrade!!! ALso by christmas the prices on the 9700 and 9700pro should have dropped under the $299 mark easy, but one thing I think ati did STUPID was make the 9700 perform so close to the 9700 pro and keep the cost so close, that is kinda a duh thing unless consumers get confused and get the 9700 thinking they have the pro version.... anyways I give my 4600ti 8/10 skirts up and have to say I am happy with the card! Time will only tell how happy I would be with the ati :)

That's fairly impressive, and interesting. I would have expected Nvidia to be getting slammed because ATI is a generation ahead of them for so long. I suppose the thing is, that there's not really anything that the 9700 Pro can do that the Ti4600 can't, with the current applications and games. A 40 FPS increase in Q3 (from 180 to 220) is pretty insignificant between the 9700 and 4600.
I'll be interested to see what happens when the NV30 comes out and ATI's generation after that comes out shortly thereafter. I think Nvidia's going to have to like, skip a generation, or something, to get back on track. They really got screwed here with the NV30 situation. With the leak of the Doom 3 pre-alpha already, and people with hefty systems still not performing well, the upcoming 6-12 months are going to be pretty crucial for GPU development. People are going to want the card now, that can play Doom 3 somewhat well, and yet they'll still want the card in 12 months, that can play it at 125 FPS. Long story short, the 9700 probably isn't going to cut it for good gameplay of Doom 3, so it should be interesting to see if the NV30 will. I think that if it does, that will be a huge boost for Nvidia, because people will be able to buy the card now, and know that it will last them through Doom 3. |

This market situation is good for buyers, we can have better cards for smallest money ;)
NVIDIA now, few weeks ATI, like in a Wheel Of Fortune ;) |
I hear ya :) I sure do like nvidia and the drivers they produce on a regular basis so I also cannot wait for the nv30 :) but I happy at the moment with my 4600ti :)

yea, overall it's a good thing for the consumers. ATI is coming out with lower cost versions which should kick nVidia in the other nad. Nothing like good ole head to head competition to drive prices down. :)
I am a bit skeptical about nVidia's claim the NV30 will be twice as fast as the ti4600. I'll believe that when I see the raw numbers. Only 11 more days till it's released so it wont be long find out what the puppy really does. |
hehehe I am just so excited about it all I think I am gonna east some pizza and take a nap! :) but seiously I am soooooo glad nvidia has received the kick in the butt they have received from ati because if they kept up like they were going the nv30 would have run $500 bones if they had no competition! Well mabey not but who knows hehe :)
