hooking up DSL

Hi there, I'm new to town.
I stumbled upon this site looking for tips and hints on how to SUCCESSFULLY hook up to DSL  (from dial-up :( ).
If anyone has any tips for me it would be greatly appreciated.
I run win98 on a pentium 333 machine.
Thanks for the advice in advance.

Regards,
Dan

First of all, you need to decide on a service provider. After you've done that, you need to see if your location qualifies. This is usually done by an initial test of your telephone number. After that, a service tech will normally come out and physicly test the line. If all is good, you will either have a self install kit sent to you or a service tech will come and do it for you.

The important thing you might want to consider when getting DSL is what kind of 'modem' you want (if your service provider gives you the option). There are basicly three types of modems you can get. PCI, external USB, and external CAT5 capable (connects to the PC via a network card).

Any of the three mentioned devices should work with Win98 provided your using Win98se (for USB support).

if you bought your self install kit from a retail store, you probably need a 10/100 network card

also remember to plug in those phone line filters the kit provides

DSL rarely requires an onsite visit anymore. Most phone companies a calulate your loop length and give it a QC test from the switchat the centrel office.
If it meets the spec the then ship your modem, along with hook-up instructions and software (if needed)
If given a choice the ethernet modem is best, followed by the usb, only consider the internal "modem" (actual it's a bridge) if you only plan to use it with one machine.

Keep in mind the filters are only used for Telephones, Faxes, and Standard Dialup Modems.

Do not connect your DSL Modem with a Filter in place. This will prevent you modem from connecting properly.

Also, some providers now offer DSL modems with built in 4 port routers. Unfortunately most will not help you configure it. But if it's an option get one. Save you some money down the road should you decide to share your connection.
