FBI Knew of Ties Between Alleged Spy, Agent-Paper

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Officials at the FBI knew for years that an accused Chinese double agent had an unusually close relationship with her FBI handler and allowed him to bend agency rules, a published report said on Friday. The special accommodations were afforded to agent James J. Smith by top FBI brass because they considered Katrina Leung a particularly valuable "asset" in the agency's ability to spy on the Chinese government, the Los Angeles Times reported.
