Default Upgrading an old Compaq...

A friend of mine just got a computer for his daughter, and asked if I could update it for him. As I expected, I ran into some problems. Got to remember it's compaq...

Alright, first off, he wanted windows 98 on it. I wrote all the origanal drivers down, formatted, and installed 98. Everything seems to work so far except the IDE controlers. It detects the 2 HDs, but will not detect the CD ROM. I looked for the drivers (OPTi Dual PCI, Viper chipset) and their website said windows comes with the correct drivers, but some mods have to be done to the INF. I tried this, but still got the same problems...

My second problem, well, not so much a problem, I also upgraded the processor. The problem...I don't know the speed of the processor. It was given to me with a glued on HS, and a sticker on the bottom. I tried to color in the sticker to find any indintions, and I found iPP. I got the processor going at 166MHz, and it works quite well, but I would like to know the speed it was made to run at...
