First thing I'ld do is run a direct crossover cable between the computers. That will eliminate the computers or the cable/hub issue. At least for a test. If it runs fine your computers are fine. Also it souldn't be EMI. I underline shouldn't because it still may be, but the construction of Lan cable's is such that the braiding is supposed to suppress EMI.
