Having multiple hard drive LEDs is traced back to the days when there was not a HD activity jumper on motherboards. Before motherboards came with the jumper onboard each hard drive had an external jumper to connect an LED. Most hard drives today do not have these connectors. Only a few SCSI drives today are being shipped with these connections.
