I've read in this thread that many of you use random Access Points if they are not secured. This is NOT Wardriving! Wardriving is the searching for wireless networks by means of a roaming (driving, walking, busing?) wireless client. Sometimes accompanied by a high gain antenna and GPS.
Wardrivers do NOT access these networks. That is illegal in all 50 states. It's generally refered to as Electronic Trespass. You can be prosecuted!
Many would ask, if you're not getting access then why do you Wardrive?
The answer to that is simple. Most of us (wardrivers, stumblers, etc) are in technical professions. Many are in the Security field. We gather this information to:
- generate statistics
- promote awareness
- to educate (ourselves and others)
- as a hobby, similar to geocaching for example.
We DO NOT access these networks! If you go check out the Netstumbler forums at
http://forums.netstumbler.com/ you'll see that, without exception, this is the understanding of what Wardriving truly is.
If you access these networks, you ARE breaking the law!
