as someone who pays for just about everything he owns, and then my rommate works 30 hours a week to pay for a 40,000/yr education, I would say that if you're not working for it, you have no right to ask. If it's offered by the rents, b/c they want to know where you are/want you to be able to contact them in emergency that's fine, but then asking a parent that question would seem to be a bit silly.
