probably just because AMD is raising their license fee and Intel is lowering theirs because of the recent losses in desktop intel has had

and intel wants to keep Dell Intel exclusive only too so it has to get some nice chipsets in so sort of gave some candies to NVIDIA to do chipsets and stuff

i think NVIDIA is asking for troubles

but yeah its all about $ so jason425 is right on that

nothing spectacular has came from ATI yet in the AMD chipset area
none of their new things impress me yet
