Default Network Connection Error

Does anyone have any ideas on the following problem? The machine is an IBM T40 on a docking station. Randomly, the network connection fails. When moving the network cable from the docking station to the port on the laptop the problem still remains.

C:\>ipconfig/all

Windows IP Configuration

An internal error occurred: A device attached to the system is not functioning.

Please contact Microsoft Product Support Services for further help.

Additional information: Unknown media status code.

There are a number of PCs / Laptops hanging off the same switch, which are not experiencing the same problem. Also, the problem will occur and then resolve itself after a few days and returm to normal. It may be the switch port, and re-patching the PC may solve the problem, or perhaps it maybe the NIC. I wanted to first check to see if there was an easy application / OS fix before looking further. Any ideas??
