Default Repairing Windows XP operating system

How do you go about repairing Windows XP operating system without reformatting the hard disk? Can you download a O.S. from the internet? ...or does it have to be from original disks?

Anyother way around this? A friend of mine doesn't have his cd anymore... And all I got is one for my laptop!

Do you still have the activation key? I think you can probably download the O.S. on the internet and activate it with your key, am I wrong?

You'd have to boot off the download though, so it'd have to be (or be made into) and ISO.
