are there any other computers on your network?

if so your local IP may have changed and 192.168.0.1 (your original IP) may be getting ports forwarded to it. whilst you have 192.168.0.2 and no ports are being forwarded.

Explain.. I don't understand how leaving it on protects your IP...

if your IP 192.168.0.1 is being used by you then another computer on your network cant take it. If your computer is off and antother computer aquires a network address it will take the first free one.
