They are both based on the same Palomino core, but they are meant for different applications. the XP will usually have a faster clock speed and is 32-bit. the MP will usually have a slower clock speed but i believe is 64-bit. the MP will be more powerful but does not support most current mobo's so you will need a new mobo.

the MP supports multi-processing also as it stands for multiprocessing platform

The AMD Athlon MP processor family is compatible with more than 60,000 software applications, including the latest 3DNow! Professional and MMX™ technology-enhanced software. To assist seamless integration into the enterprise environment, AMD has partnered with industry-leading hardware and software companies. AMD also conducts its own rigorous processor validation to ensure comprehensive compatibility. Systems based on this platform are available immediately from industry-leading OEMs worldwide.

And just for reference the Athlon 4 is USUALLY used in notebooks, and has the Palomino core.

This has led to strange behaviors in hard core Athlon fans, since it was released before the XP and was seldom seemn on retail shelfs some people actually bought new notebooks with the 4 in them and ripped them apart and put the CPU in the |337 box.

.....I mean seriously.....
