this is gonna sound very odd but I don't use a mousepad at all.
What I use is called 'Teflon Baking Sheet'.
It's basically a thin sheet of cloth coated with teflon (on both sides) that is intended for use in ovens and microwaves. They stop food stick to traditional metal baking tins. (this shows how tough these things are).
The sheet itself is almost paper thin and if you have a smooth desk you can cellotape it on the 4 corners so it doesn't move about. You don't catch your wrist on the side of it.
It's also pretty large and could probably make 2 mouse matts.
What I have done with mine is cropped off the corners and superglued then to my Msoft explorer v3's feet for telfon on telfon frictionless glide.
The sheet is great for optical mice - not sure about balled mice as there might not be enough traction for the rubber ball.
The sheet is £2.99 over here in the UK and I got mine from a supermarket called Sainsburys.
Here's a link to some1 who has tried it:

Other than that I can reccomend the Func pad - I used one before the Teflon sheet and it has a rough n smooth side for both types of mouse.
The Func is expensive tho' - weighing in at £25+ plus in the UK.
