NV Silencer 5 Problems
I just installed an NV silencer 5 on my 6800 GT, but the temps are in the 70's (c) when idle. I must have done something wrong when installing it becuase there is cold air coming out the exhaust. any ideas?

did you use any thermal grease?
even if you used the stuff that came with it.. it sucks.. i'd get some arctic silver 5 and slap it on as directed. At any rate, pretty sure it has something to do with how (if) you applied the thermal paste/grease/whatever

if you don't play any games, no.. but if you do, the temps could get to dangerous levels.... Having someone that has experince do it is a good idea. What were the temps before?

That seems really weird.. I have a GT too with NV 5 greased up with arctic silver 5. my idle temps are around 40-50 and load is around 50-60. what manufacturer makes your card?

mfgr makes NO difference when he has an nv5... only time mfgr makes a diff is when you have their stock cooling...
irregardless of who he has, it's eithier a severe case flow issue, or a thermal paste issue...

manufacturer does make a diff.. they dont all send circuit boards to nvidia and let them make the same board.. each manufacturer gets a reference design and from there they can decide to keep the specs/layout and other things, or they can just modify it.

they can't modify much... they aren't card designers... the grease is his prob - leave it at that

I also have this problem with my PNY 6800GT. PNY's memory is somewhat seated higher than normal compared to other 6800GTs that the Nvidia Silencer 5 doesnt make good contact with the GPU core. I lapped the all the area that makes contact with the videocard memory so that the Nvidia Silencer heatsink makes proper contact with the CPU core and my idle temps dropped fro 76C to 60C.
