Default Ram DDR timings

Can someone tell me the value of Ram timings and why are they so relevant? I've heard that DDR400 is the fastest out, but then i see DDR533 and stuff and it makes me wonder... And if my timings are at 2.5-3-3-7 is that good? Or is 2-3-2-6 better? Is it the lower the better?

yea the lower the better.... it doesn't matter AS MUCH for p4's with the 865/875 chipset as it does for athlons... FSB is the thing to worry most about for p4's..
