assuming your OS is windows 2000 or XP...it's not bad. Your video card is what's holding you back though

Yeah it would be XP and I was worried about the video card. I wanted to buy a Gateway Profile 4XL but it isn't upgradeable. Forgive my ignorance and I swear I've read up on the topic but I prefer the opinions of people who know their shit and don't have any interests to protect.

What kind of gaming could I expect with that set-up? Average, less than average?

Your CPU and RAM are perfect for gaming. The MX400 will give you average gameplay but only in low settings. You might want to consider upgrading it to at least a 64MB card.

One more quick question, I've been browsing games and noticed a lot of the ones I'd be intrested in aren't available on XP. What platform offers the most chioces for gaming?

don't go for the MX line of cards. Its definately not going to give you near the quality as the Ti series.

and about xp gaming issues, all games i've ever tried have worked fine on XP even if the box only says 98/2000. I'm a pretty big gamer but i'm specific to a few games, although i try to keep up on new ones and i've never heard xp compatability issues for games, that can't be cured by a game patch or update.

The graphic card is your bottleneck buddy. Might try to find a gf4 ti 4200 for a cheap price. That would make your system or SET UP a really nice gaming system.

the Ti4200 gives you performance with a small sacrafice to the piggy bank compared to other high performance cards

Win2000 is best gaming os

i know a few games which don't work on XP *properly*, rogue spear being the main one

gfx is crap compared to rest of sys, get a GF3 Ti 200 (128mb) at least, GF4 Ti 4200 recommended, 4600 the bomb

I believe 98 is the best gaming OS

2k is too much of a cpu/resource hog to run heavy games.

and most all games now-a-days will work on 98
