Default Next Gen Intel Details Released

Montecito, an Itanium 2 that will arrive next year, will sport SpeedStep, a technology first deployed in notebooks that slows down a chip during lull periods to cut power, said Jason Waxman, a director in Intel's Enterprise Multiprocessor Platforms group. The chip will also contain a complementary technology called Foxton that will speed things up during peak periods.

Correct me if Im wrong but doesn't AMD already have that technology? Cool 'N' Quiet I believe its called. Why does it take Intel a whole generation and two years of time to impliment features already present in other competing products? Of course this support comes at a price tag that may choke some consumers and will only be present in server level chips for now. I guess Intel feels that the P4 Prescotts run cool enough and wouldn't benefit from this technology.

Check out what Cnet Has to say.
