Default broadband modem mod mayham

yeah i did it! today a friend of mine from the anonymous modaholics and i modded my dsl modem. it,s a alcatel speed touch home and i simply couldn´t stand those green leds any more. so i hacked it open and foun out tha big shit: it´s got the leds SMD-mounted. SMD (for those who don´t know means Surface Mounted Device) is a frickin hell to solder ´cause the parts are terribly small. in this case the leds are 3mm x 2.4mm x 2.1mm. so we went to the nearest store similar to radio shack (our´s is named conrad)
and i bought 6 of the blue SMD-leds (each about 1$ and a bigass 10mm high power(20000 mcd) red led. we also got two solder needles(very small soldering irons) rated 12volts/7.5watts. while soldering ya gotta be quick ´cause those babes get over 450°C and can easily destroy the expensive little lights. ok, after about 45 minutes of work we had changed the 5 leds (me workin on tha neddles (i´m no DJ ;D) and my friend at the pincette holding the parts). and you wouldn´t believe it, it worked. although the leds are a bit dim because they are rated up to 4 volts and get only 1,9 from the modem. ok that´s for today, tomorrow i´ll finish by cuttin´ a window into the modem and puttin the high power led in (steal elecricity from the modems supply) and maybe a 5cm fan for a little extra coolin´. stay tuned , i´ll finish it tomorrow and tell ya the story.
