most of my things automatically update and i check it while i'm waiting ( eating food, stopped at home, waiting parked..etc )

automatic operations:

email is received
road maps
real-time access point information
real-time & projected weather forecast

every time i start up it accesses my access point [if i'm at home] and sends/receives from my server the following:

receives:
"to car" songs + music vids
calander information, alerts and whatnot as a reminder.
configuration scripts
well-planned playlists

sends:
access point logs
gps information
songs i get elsewhere that i want to listen to at home.

while i'm driving its easy to access:

a shit load of songs

thats about it i'm not dickin around with everything while i'm driving. its normally me just hittin' the next button, but i do have playlists set up, so its pretty easy to avoid hitting any buttons at all....i'm not a dangerous driver!! *famous last words*.. seriously i am safe..besides, i drive a manual so i gotta pay attention

stuff when i'm not on the road driving, but in my car:

watching [music] videos
links to my ftp servers
ssh to my home computer, and hosting server for maintenance or whatever.
check forums
upload pictures
listen to more music..
instant message people.

i'm planning on getting a video camera soon so i can upload my video adventures / family trips and what not to my car-puter via firewire so i don't have to buy new tapes nearly as often.

more stuff than you might care about

hmm roadmap
thats nice

although can you make it almost like a GPS feature?

im wondering if anyone is developing a technology where a computer's location can be tracked by the access point

well all a script would have to do is:

grab gps raw data from serial

and from the raw data you could take specific parts for latitude / longitude, city, state and host that with apache [ httpd ]

ya know.. with some easy php script..

not too hard, but then again it would only update when you get on an access point.

edit: oh nevermind... getting an external ip address at each access point would be ridiculous you couldn't track the "webserver/carputer".. plus you couldn't forward the ports to your internal ip i'm retarded...

but you could get it to upload the info to a 'static' ip [ like a hosted webserver somewhere ] whenever you connect to an access point.

Default Watch the legalities of your Wardriving activities

I've read in this thread that many of you use random Access Points if they are not secured. This is NOT Wardriving! Wardriving is the searching for wireless networks by means of a roaming (driving, walking, busing?) wireless client. Sometimes accompanied by a high gain antenna and GPS.

Wardrivers do NOT access these networks. That is illegal in all 50 states. It's generally refered to as Electronic Trespass. You can be prosecuted!

Many would ask, if you're not getting access then why do you Wardrive?

The answer to that is simple. Most of us (wardrivers, stumblers, etc) are in technical professions. Many are in the Security field. We gather this information to:

- generate statistics
- promote awareness
- to educate (ourselves and others)
- as a hobby, similar to geocaching for example.

We DO NOT access these networks! If you go check out the Netstumbler forums at http://forums.netstumbler.com/ you'll see that, without exception, this is the understanding of what Wardriving truly is.

If you access these networks, you ARE breaking the law!

And accessing means actually connecting to it...i.e. getting and IP address and becoming a node of the network. Accessing doesn't necessarily mean trying to connect to an actual computer within that network. It's the actual act of intruding on that network that is the crime. So don't think that because"I just use the Internet" that you're not engaged in an illegal act.

If you don't have the explicit permission of the owner of the network, you are breaking the law.

There are a lot of grey areas involved as well. For instance, Kismet, when enabled, will log raw packet data that is transmitted over wireless. This also includes becon frames, data, and regular network traffic (DHCP requests, router advertisements, etc), even if it originates from a wired node on that network. Not all AP's are switched and most will broadcast all data it receives from a wired source. This could be constituted as accessing a network. Also, Airsnort can crack WEP. If you do, even in your own network just for fun, you are breaking the law. Cracking an encryption scheme is illegal. Tools like Netstumbler are unable to do this (to my knowledge). As an avid wardriver/walker/boater, I can understand the temptation of messing with a network with a SSID of "F*** off Wardriver!!!!," or gaining free access to the internet. If you do, you are commiting a Class C Felony.
