we had a big discussion here recently regarding current reputation of motherboard makers and the quality of their current products

so far, Gigabyte is taking the lead for feature-rich, stable, good quality, and well supported motherboards

DFI being the leading in insane overclocking
i think chaintech just left the mobo making business

soltek being the decent but budget board

Abit, MSI, Asus are all not good choices at this moment for AMD platforms

Well I must say I had hoped for better when I built this rig.

But it does occur to me that I essentially have two complete systems (including a legacy SB Live! Plat 5.1**) Maybe I should consider putting all the components together for that second system, network them and squirrel away the noisier of the two in a closet--out of sight and out of earshot. Then, I can simply relegate one computer to the media authoring tasks while the other is my workstation. That would be the best I could hope for with dual processing anyway.

Hell I'm already about to upgrade my Replay to a DVArchive configuration (whereby both Replay & the computer use remotely networked secondary storage. Not only does that solve heat dissipation and noise problems as you try to beef up a Digital Video Recorder with serious hardisk capacity--it also greatly extends the potential upper limits of that capacity)

**In a former life I was singer/songwriter--upgraded to Audigy in an attempt to solve some audio recording latency issues. Someday I'll discuss with you why Creative Labs sound cards are Top-of-the-Line for Gamers and Playback but not really ready for serious Audio Production Primetime. And at the risk of causing serious offense I'll just say this is still an area where the RISC architecture and more fault tolerant Media handling of Mac's yet prevails for PC level applications. Lots of folks at the forefront of DVArching are using UNIX and Apple for the controlling interfaces since they present a more stable and robust OS than MS Windows.

Yup, it's not about needing to spend more money either. Those Sound Blasters we own already exceed the price threshold of cards more suited to Audio Production.

BTW:
Corsair got back to me on the overclocking issue. They wouldn't guarantee 400 for those simms but said the warrantee would hold provided I didn't exceed 2.9 volts. But it doesn't seem like a variable you'd want to introduce to this potential new system.....

I have collected a ton of that stuff over the years.
Currently I mostly use
SHURE E2 Earphones &
SENNHEISER HD-555 Fusion Stereo Headphones

Actually I don't really like to record with any kind of amplification at all. I play acoustic guitar and piano and my sound is very "acoustic" I've never plugged anything into my ear that didn't somehow distort what I'm actually putting out.

I actually wonder if Madonna and Britney carry on normal conversation with their headset plugged in Miss Aguilera--now that's another story completely--Girl's got some pipes!

When I lived in Houston I was extemely particular about my sound system--'course I had a whole house to work with. I live in NYC now--I have a Co-op. I didn't even bring up most of my sound equippment from TX. There's no way to unleash it here....

BTW Evil,
Just noticed your in BC. I'm a Canuk myself. Vancouver has a really Positive Energy recording tradition in the works. I date it to at least the emergence of KD Lang--who bucked the impulse to let LA dictate terms and kept production closer to home.
