hmm that's about $250.. You CAN get a 9800 for easily under $200, but if i were you i'd save up a bit more for an x800 Pro or 6800GT
christmas time will be a good bet for you to snatch up one of these suckers at a good price.

now that NVIDIA and ATI are on even grounds, it is really hard for me to choose which card to get

sigh

so IF i am to buy an X800 Pro or 6800GT, which one should i get?
ATI or NVIDIA?

i know this is gonna turn into one of those threads again but just btwn these 2 cards, which one wins?

no biased opinions please
i guess ill have to investigate a little more when HL2 comes out as well

6800GT is faster(slightly) in almot every game. it has 16 pipelines while the x800 Pro has 12, which is why you can get the x800 Pro considerably cheaper than the GT. The extra pipelines help greatly in next gen games starting with far cry. its your pick really, do you want an excellent video(GT) card or an above average video card(x800).. also dont forget that if you are a video editor stay away from the 6800 series. I just sold my 6800GT cause its too much power for my cpu.. so I'm considering an x800 Pro.

MPEG2 encoding and decoding acceleration works on the 6800 series cards which is fine for DVD quality video work. The problem is with encoding and decoding of advanced video formats like MPEG4 and WMV.

depends.. (oh and the gt is on some ups truck right now to cali..) after that rhetoric: here's the plain and simple take on it... if you are going to stick some good cooling on it AND are willing to take a risk on the gpu dying (heard it happening disproportionally alot compared to other cards from heat) AND aren't going to do WMV HD anything... then maybe the GT is for you.. sm3.0 helps too... but the ATI is a real solid pick too, esp with your current hardware....

ok maybe not so plain and simple.. but less bs...

most likely the x800... when I took my bfg 6800 to almost ultra speeds (it couldn't do 400/1.1.. but could do 397/1.1... it would get up to 89*c in rthdribl.... I doubt it would last too long at that.. and I didn't want to run slower, so I got rid of it...
