Macworld 2008

Day 4 - Expo Floor (Moscone South) & Final Thoughts

Moscone South was where it was really happening. All the big company booths could be found there. Among the most notable: Apple, Microsoft, Adobe, Peacpit, and FileMaker.

The crowd pleaser and main attraction here was of course the MacBook Air demo area. A huge table was setup with a good number of the "thinnovation" (to quote the poster ad). It took a while but, I managed to finally squeeze my way through the monster of people and get my first up-close and personal interaction with the new sub-notebook. Truly amazing. I got to hold it and play with some of the standard OS features. I was shown how to manipulate the new multi-touch trackpad as well as how to install software like Microsoft's Office 2008 for Mac using the new Remote Disc feature (due to the fact an Air has no optical drive). The Air is definitely ahead of its time and currently only fullfils the needs of select computer users.

The other notable laptop on the floor was noneother than Axiotron's Modbook. This MacBook modification is the only tablet-like Mac on the market. They were putting on demos using Adobe's Photoshop, Apple's Leopard operating system, and even Microsoft's Windows Vista operating system. Near the end of the day, they put on a prize raffle where the grand prize was a brand new Modbook. Again, I did not win anything!

As I was making my way towards the exit I noticed a former TechTV group taping a spot for their online show. It was Patrick Norton, with now co-host Veronica Belmont of Mahalo Daily, and Roger Chang (cameraman), from Revision3's Tekzilla video podcast series. I took the opportunity to get a quick snap of the crew and chat for a few minutes before they had to move on to their next shoot. Click here to see their coverage of Macworld 2008.

Final Thoughts

I had such a great time! It was my first trip not only to Macworld, but also my first time to California. It was a great year for the expo with terrific vendors and many surprises. I got to see Steve Jobs give a keynote, new products from all around the world, a few internet superstars, and also got to attend a Final Cut Pro User Group super-meet (being an Apple Certified Final Cut Pro Trainer has its perks). I plan to attend next year and take advantage of the experience I gained from this one so I can see more products and meet many more people.
