Microsoft Exchange Server 2007

Microsoft Exchange 2007

With the introduction of Exchange 2007 MS has taken much of the feedback from previous versions of Exchange and integrated their advice. This tool is now easier to use, impliment, and manage. Configurations are much more simple as is the interface. Unfortunately not all is sunshine and daisies, Exchange 2007 will force all businesses to use 64 bit processors and OS's. This means new servers and new licenses of Windows 2003 server for most companies. Additionally to fully utilize the advanced filtering and features of Exchange 2007 you will also need more than one server with one setup as the Hub Server and the other setup as an Edge Server which must be outside the domain and firewall. The hardware requirements have increased yet again but this time for good reason. With the additional hardware requirements comes the ability to have inboxes and information stores limited only by the size of your hard drive. Overall we feel the new features and capabilities of Exchange 2007 are well worth the upgrade.

One of the interesting but rather unknown facts is that MS has made a 32 bit version of Exchange 2007 available for Virtual PC and testing purposes. The presentation made it seem that due to features a 32 bit version was not possible, however, it would seem this is not so as we saw a working version running in a 32 bit application. One of the programmers we spoke to also confirmed that there was a 32 bit version available.

Microsoft Office 2007

Office 2007 finally brings together what began as a separate collection of applications intended function alone. Office 2007 unifies the office suite with new collaboration features, interoperability, and a unified look and feel. One of the important redesigns is actually an import from an earlier office. We all remember "clippy" the annoying little guy who always seemed to popup in the wrong place trying to help.

If you are like me the first thing you did was turn clippy off after four or five times of seeing him in the corner. MS has kept the intelligence behind clippy and improved his intuition and integrated it into the menu bars. Additionally the menus are no longer drop downs and instead MS has created the menu ribbon which is much more intuitive and useful.

Changes to documents, charts, cells, and presentations are now live. This means that if you highlight text and go to change the font you will only have to scroll through the selections to get a live preview of the new look before making your selection. Its one of those features you really didn't think about or miss before and will now wonder how you did without it. We feel MS really hit the target with the new Office 2007 suite and believe it will be very well received by consumers. Several different packages are available to consumers. The chart below should help you define which package meets your needs. We must note that we find it unusual that MS chose to remove Outlook 2007 from the Professional, Ultimate, and Small Business versions of Office 2007as this is a key application that may will miss.

Microsoft SYP System:

In a daring and bold new move, Microsoft has decided to impliment the Share Your Pain system in which if you receive an error you can select from three different methods to share your frustration with the actual programmer that created the bug you are experiencing. Selections include the Jab, Stun, and Impact. These methods are very interesting as they . . . well you should see for yourself. This is without a doubt the funniest video we have seen in a while.
