Important Notes:
The important information to take from these specifications have to do with Storage (Hard Drive), OS, RAM, and Battery.
- Storage (Hard Drive): In the case of the S101 the hard drive is SSD and for some reason Asus has decided that the US market doesnt deserve the 32 and 64GB flavors, instead opting to only make the 16GB version available.
- OS (Operating System): Once again Asus has for some reason decided that the 16GB version is to be equipped with Windows XP while the 32 and 64GB versions come with Linux. We suspect this is due to the licensing costs of Windows XP and the abundance of pirated versions of XP that can be found overseas. It is important for US consumers as you should be aware that after an installation of Windows XP and even a standard version of MS Office you will be left with very little storage space for anything else. To compensate Asus has taken the cheap way out and bundled the 16GB version with a 16GB SD card which can be inserted in the card slot for additional storage. Do not be fooled though as this form of storage is not only much slower than onboard storage but is also suseptable to being ejected or lost.
- RAM: Once again for an unknown reason Asus has limited the S101 to 1GB of Ram. While it is possible to open the ram slot on the bottom of the machine and insert a 2GB module, the result is that the S101 will still only recognize 1GB total. We suspect this is a bios issue and have had no response to our inquiries as to why Asus has done this.
- UPDATE: As suspected the issues was tied to the bios. We have become aware that this ram upgrade issue affects many of the EeePC line. When an Asus EeePC does not recognize 2048 (2GB) of ram the fix is as follows:
- Enter the Bios, load system defaults.
- Save and Exit the Bios.
- Re-Enter the Bios, setup your preferences.
- Save and exit the Bios.
- Boot System normally and enjoy your updated ram. (2048MB/2GB)

- Battery: In the case of battery Asus has included a VERY slim 2Cell 2450mAh battery. This was done for weight savings. The result is that the S101 has an effective battery life of approximately 3.5 hours of standard usage. If you enable power savings and reduce the display brightness the battery life can be extended to 4.5 hours. In all reality Asus' claims of 5.4 hours battery life would only be possible by reducing the display brightness to mininum and disabling bluetooth, wireless, and ethernet. In essence you will then have a low powered PDA or movie player (enjoy the eye strain trying to see the dim picture).
- Side Note: Wouldn't it be nice if manufacturers listed the minimum battery life with all features turned on?
