Supercomputing 2006 Vendors Continued
Wintec
Also present at SC06 was Wintec. Wintec offers memory for everything from the value or budget market all the way to high end and server memory. They were nice enough to lay out several samples and show us their product line. We will be looking forward to providing reviews of several of their product lines in the near future.
NEC
NEC had a small
but nice booth at SC06 and is showing off their SX-8 which was actually announced
in November 2004. While the SX-8R is the latest version of the SX-8 series.
The SX-8R CPU runs at a higher clockspeed than the SX-8 and has two vector-add
and two vector-multiply units. Its peak performance is more than twice that
of the original SX-8. Its performance can range from 299.2GF - 153.1TF
with its 8 - 4096 cpu's. The SX-8 is truly in the category of supercomputer
and looks like it would be right at home in some science fiction movie.
Cray
Known for being the computer at the heart of the Batcave, Cray has been in the supercomputer market for a long time. They just announced two new system at SC06:
"The newly launched Cray XT4(TM) supercomputer (formerly known as "Hood") and the Cray XMT(TM) massively multithreaded system ("Eldorado") are both part of Cray's Rainier program, the initial phase of the company's Adaptive Supercomputing vision that will bring all Cray's processing technologies together onto a common infrastructure. The Cray XT(TM) infrastructure provides a common user environment for login, compilation and running scripts, a common resource manager and work scheduler, a unique high-performance parallel file system and various intersystem interfaces.
The commercially available Cray XT4 supercomputer is Cray's next-generation scalable massively parallel processing (MPP) system. Featuring the latest generation of AMD Opteron dual-core processors, along with expanded memory and communication capacity, the system was designed to scale beyond a petaflop (1,000 trillion floating point operations per second) performance. The company has already announced large Cray XT4 orders from Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center and CSC Finland. "
MSI Computer
MSI is present as well at SC06 and has several offerings to the server and supercomputer market. MSI had on display its X2-203-A8R server which is a dual socket Intel Dual Core Xeon capable system. The X2-203-A8R has 12 FB DIMM slots and comes in a 2U Form factor. With several server and system offerings MSI has some good competition for existing servers in the market.
