Mounting the Window

Mounting is described in a simple way, but is very difficult to perform.  The rubber mounting strip is very flexible, with the consistency of a wet noodle. The steps for mounting are placing the rubber strip, putting the window in-place, install the locking strip.

First: With the inside of the panel up, place the rubber mounting strip  around the opening. Thin slot towards the metal, it is possible to do it backwards. Below is an illustration of what the strip looks like.

Rubber Mounting Strip

Cut the excess about 1/2" too long and leave it overlapped at the joint.

Second:  With the inside of the panel still up, begin fitting the window into the slot on the rubber strip while holding the rubber in place. Using soapy water will help keep the rubber from sticking.  Use a sponge to apply soapy water to the rubber.  Cut the excess mounting strip to fit.

Third: Once the window is inserted into the mounting strip, the locking strip needs to be put in place. Again, this is rubber against rubber... use soapy water to break the surface tension.  Begin inserting the locking strip opposite the joint of the mounting strip.

Fourth: Using your finger or a wooden spoon, press the strip down and slide the spoon along to force the  the locking strip down. The soapy water will act as a lubricant for the spoon and the strip will glide into place. After a couple hours the water will dry and the rubber will lock.

Tips:

  • Do not start the locking strip in the same place you started the mounting strip.  Start at the opposite end.  More joints in one place will lead to instability.

  • Use soapy water to break the surface tension of the rubber. This will help it slide together more easily.

Additional Ideas

Adding Fans: Fans can be added to a window if you have the right tools. It is imperative that you use a hole saw to cut the hole for a fan. Once again, let the blade do the work.  Plexi is brittle and it is possible to shatter or crack it. Also pre-drill full size, not pilot holes for the mounting screws for the fan .  Below is a beautiful example a friend built.

Now that you have seen just how easy it is to put your new window in, GO CRAZY!  Add some lighting, rearrange all your cables, paint your cards, etc.. the possibilities are endless.
