Comdex 2002

Written by Harry Lam and Edward Chang

November 25, 2002

The Final Stretch:

This last part allows me to post up some random pics and comments about what we saw at Comdex Fall 2002.

Enermax

Enermax was showing off some new case designs as well as their usual PSU and other assorted products.

Huge array of PSUs and mobile docks

Nothing else like it

Not just colored cases

I really like those full tower cases

I like the colors and designs of these cases

Zalman:

Zalman had their typical copper coolers for show at Comdex, as well as some new products.  Zalman has added a fanbus, a flash memory card recorder, a new style VGA heatpipe cooler, copper based orb type HSF solutions (although unlike Tt's copper orb), and a new HSF unit featuring a fan shroud.

Zalman's product lineup

The product that interested me the most is Zalman's ZM80A-HP heat pipe cooler which is compatible on all video cards having holes around the GPU.  I for one wouldn't mind having one of these in my lab and seeing how well it performs both alone and with fans attached.

That's one HUGE heatsink

Closer up view of the unit

Thermagic:

Thermagic is a relatively unknown company which has some pretty unique products, basically a heatsink compound that claimed better performance than Artic Silver 3, as well as a completely sealed liquid cooling system (pics below).  I'll give their heatsink compound a test in a few days and see how it performs.

Sunbeam:

I was surprised to see Sunbeam at Comdex, as I have only recently heard of them (and their CCFL light kits).  It looks more and more that case modding is moving into the mainstream.

Lookie at all the pretty lights

AMD Revisited:

To supplement Edward's portion of Comdex Fall 2002 coverage, I'll post up a few more pictures from AMD.

The other half

AMD's kiosk; only sign of AMD on the floor

Directron:

And yes, finally one of the last things that surprised me.  Directron was actually out on the floor in the exhibition hall.

Surprising

Some of their bright lights =P

Final Thoughts

It's been a memorable first Comdex and hopefully it won't be the last.  As we all know, the parent company for Comdex, Key3Media has been in deep trouble financially (hell, its stock is trading at two cents).  The attendance this year was much lower than it was in previous years, both in terms of the exhibitors and the attendees.  Those of you who are interested in the current state of Comdex might want to check out this article over here.
