Lol, this article seems somewhat absurd to me. Sounds like it was created by someone who didn't really believe any of the stuff, but was given the assignment of writing the article.
"If your children have cellphones, try preprogramming them to dial 911, with the push of a single button or two." Hm, gee, as opposed to pressing three? Saving a button press is pretty crucial.
"[Keep] baby monitors in older kids' rooms to listen for disruptions or unusual noise." Uh, yeah...I can just see teenagers being real happy about a baby monitor in their bedroom. I'm sure they'd just leave them there, functioning because they want to be safe though. [/sarcasm]
"You may consider using [...] a GPS-enabled wrist watch that can be used as a tracking device." Paranoid much? Again, I'm sure the kids would be just terribly thrilled to have their parents knowing their exact location at all times. We all know that Billy is actually doing homework with Johnny at Johnny's house, not making out with Amanda at her house, because that's what he said, right? Have fun explaining that one Billy.

That's a big no. I have been a child before though.
I'm assuming you, or someone, is going to say how having something bad happen to your child is the worst fear of a parent, and it's uncomprehendable to non-parents. This is likely true, but I think this is somewhat playing on that fear, and trying to make a profit/publicity. People are so desperate for someone else to tell them how to do things, in my opinion, that they'll just eat up stuff like this, or parenting booklets that give specific instructions for dealing with specific situations. There's no right way to live life, or parent, or whatever. People just want to believe there is, so they can do it "right."
I'm just saying that kids have free will, and if their childhoods are anything like mine (which, in hindsight is unlikely), they aren't going to be too keen on the idea of being constantly monitored.

im still a teenager and the only solution there which any normal (eg not a complete and utter momma's boy who thinks sex is a bad word) teenager would accept would be a cell phone
the best form of protection would be good parenting, teaching right from wrong etc... so the teenager/kid doesn't feel he has to lie to his parents, odds are all teenagers lie to their parents about there whereabouts and what they are doing at some point, but we need our own freedom and privacy as well, GPS tracking is unreasonable imo, a teenager should be allowed to go and do what they want (not illegal but see who they want to etc.. )as long as there is a set time to return and a way to contact, i don't think parents should have root access to our whole lives
sorry if the above doesn't make much sense.. but its 10pm and im tired

yes, these device are for kids that are too small to carry or use a cellphone.
For teens and adults they aren't worth it, we have better ways of protecting ourselves.
If you aren't a parent it would be hard for you to understand the need for these devices.
These devices should not take place of parental supervision and being a good parent. They should be in conjuction w/ being a good parent.
