the new powerbooks
I know this is more PC oriented but I wanted to still post it.
If you have not heard Apple just introduced new powerbooks (notebook) one with a 17" lcd and a dvd burner and the other a 12" lcd with a combo drive. The prices are 17" powerbook 3299 and the 12" powerbook 1799.
Now if i had that kind of money.

no, I just thought u would only need the specs on them. I could have easily got the link from apple or any of the mail order companies, like MacMall.

oh no i just meant that it was for anyone else who is too lazy to look for the link..
i was looking at them the other day, my friend is thinking of getting one.
oh and also i think apple is going to really gain backing from the open source community in a huge way, anyone with bias against apple or mac OS needs to check up on the giant in the making.
I really think the only thing apple doesn't have going for them right now is the applicational backing, but with all these open source developers I really think they're going to be hard competition for microsoft in the next few years.
Ya know i should start a new thread on this, with mac_forevers help of course ;D

Don't worry in a couple of months you will see a windows laptop with a 17" lcd. Now I wonder how much it would cost though. It might be a couple hundred less than the mac.
Now the apps, apple has started improving and gaining more publishers to make mac programs. Because OSX is unix based, programs for unix can easily be converted for the mac.
There is already one set of programs called , i think, 10 Unix apps for X.

I have to hand it to Apple, they've done a magnificent job on this new batch of laptops, from what I've seen and read. Plus, with OS X, I think they're really going to start drawing new users. I really wish someone would put together a laptop hardware package like Apple does. They include so many leading edge technologies that you'd never be able to fit onto many PC laptops, since you have only one or two PCMCIA slots. For example, they have gigabit ethernet, bluetooth, 802.11g, firewire, dvd burner. Most PC laptops I've seen have 10/100 ethernet, *maybe* 802.11b, USB 1.1, and maybe a DVD-ROM.
Oh yeah, and that illuminating keyboard looks hella-sweet.
What they don't say, however, is that for the even the examples they gave in the promotional video I watched, is that for the applications they were demonstrating, there's maybe one or two permutations of hardware and software that will give the desired result. Mac OS X/Jaguar is nicer than 9.x, but it's still no walk in the park. Like I said earlier, I want the hardware configuration, not the OS.
