Server O.S.'s

Which server operating systems do you guys/girls prefer? Please include some reasons. I am going to be reloading my Sun Spark 20 and I was wondering what OS I should use. This server supports both Unix and Microsoft, and I will be using it for my home proxy server. Thanks.

If you're just going to use for a proxy either FreeBSD, RedHat or Solaris would do the trick just fine.

I'm not a big fan of MS Server Products. I use Both FreeBSD and RedHat.

FreeBSD on a PIII 750 and Redhat on a Cobalt Raq4r

You can get both online.

Used Solaris 6 on our Sun Spark's when I worked for a local ISP. Solaris is pretty rock solid for doing what you want including firewall protection as well.

So three choices, all you can do is play with em and make up your own mind. They are all great Operating Systems.

Install the OS you know the best

MS proxy has several security lacks, but that's not new. also can't be installed separately from OS

I like to Run AS/400 software on my AS/400 computer with my AS/400 keyboard and my AS/400 monitor while I dream about impaling my head on an AS/400 stick (or do I just want to run it through anyone that had to do with my company getting an AS/400??).  It sucks really really bad.

I personally know Windows 2000 Server and my dad is a Unix Admin.

Most of good things in W2K srv are comming from Unix world
If you have a time, learn Unix, since you can get serious support. If not, keep practicing on Win2000 srv.

Well, I will suggest u load Redhat linux ver 7.2 Which I am currently using. There u find squid proxy(Comes along with the redhat) It will give u grapic & command interface. Very simple to use. Also patches r on net. u can dowload it.

Any version of Linux is going to be cheaper, more secure, and probably have better eventual functionality than Windows 2000 Server or Advanced Server. With Linux, however, it would be necessary to know a significant amount more than using a Windows-based OS.

I personally am using Windows 2000 Advanced Server, simply because I'm not very familliar with Linux, and don't have the time to learn it at the moment.

If you need strong security or have time on your hands to learn, go with Linux, if you want easy (well, easier for me) setup go with Windows.
