Default i think my phone is being hijacked (phreaked)

well phone ringed and this automated system for a cable company's billing service was talking when i picked up the fone

it just rang, no 1 called or used the phone within 10 mins of that time

then there were some buttons being pressed and i could hear the tones going...
then i asked who is there
no 1 answered

so i hanged up immediately

no 1 was in the house at that time
just me

later i called Telus (phone company) to ask them about security questions regarding this matter
then suddenly the line got cut or something, it just hanged up and i could hear some clipping sound...

i think there is 80% of chance that my phone is being hijacked and phreaked
so far, phone bill hasnt show any strange things yet for November...

before this, we have had phones ring for once or twice then stops and when we pick up, there is no sound...
it does that about twice a month...

when i finally talked to the Telus again, they said i have to call the service and repair line
then they will do a search or whatever, and if there is nothing, they will charge a fee of $38.50 CAD (canadian)

what should i do???

wait a few more days to confirm if it is really being hacked?

If Telus is anything like Qwest, they have no idea what they're talking about, and probably wouldn't be able to find out your phone line was being hacked if there was a guy sitting outside your house next to your phone line with a laptop hooked to it. I would suggest looking for anything suspicious in the vicinity of your external phone box (where the line comes into the house), or near the phone pole or junction/terminal to which your line runs). From my understanding, basic phone line hacking requires physical access to the line somewhere in those locations. If you do see something weird, then go ahead and call them out, but I personally think it's somewhat unlikely to be happening.

Also it could be many other things, phone techs working on the line, making cable cuts etc. You may have a wireless handset - porta phone, and other porta phones close-by are interfering at times.

I do not know about Canada, but in the U.S. , everyone has an 'interface box' outside where the home wiring cross-connects to the telco line. The home owner is supposed to go out ( if he has phone problems ) and open the box, unplug the telco line and plug in a telephone and test his line there, if he gets dialtone etc and can dial ok, then he has house problems, and to repair that the ph co WILL charge, but if he can not dial or hears excessive line noise, etc, then that is the telco problem and they will NOT charge.
It pays to have a $9.95 walmart special elcheapo phone just to test with at times of troubles to isolate the problem as yours or theirs.

Hacking your line would require a physical connection somewhere close by, and it would take a court order for the Telco to legally tap your phone, in that case you would not hear or suspect a thing as it would be done in the CO. Normally by one tech and none of the others would know about it.

Personally I suspect some type interference.

ok, this is my first post... wow! exciting stuff this. yes it does require physical access to your phone, the common one is known as a "beige box" which is basicly a phone with crocodile clips on it that u attatch to the line. this can be done anywhere upto and including your local exchange, but is normaly the junction box at the end of the road, if theres scratch marks etc on your ouside box (attatched to your house) keep a look out on it, film it maybe? catch the little sod in the act and get him busted.

Fade: Ah nice to see a new face around. I hope Uranium-235 didn't scare you off (play nice U-235).

Eviltechie: Well, keep us posted. That is some weird/suspicious behavior, but I'd try to avoid jumping to conclusions like that.

well...

i know how to phreak pretty well because ive made a red box b4
not hard

the problem is, it is hard for me to actualy go and trace where it originates
at the time, i was using a corded phone

but that is a good point, jinx

also, i live in an apartment
there is an electricity room in the building
where the power boxes are located
my friend says he has a master key for all the telus, BC hydro locks

so maybe one day that he brings it, i will do some investigations in there...
but it would be a break in...
hmm
best not...

i dunno...
nothing suspecious happened these days after that
if it happens again, ill call the Telus service line again
and ill keep you guys posted

thanx alot you all

and welcome to TWL, Fade

My phone flasher lighted up and I checked on the caller ID box says Out of Area. I typed on my TTY, no one replying back on TTY, I pressed the VOICE RELAY to remind the caller use TTY or dial the relay service and I wait for them still nothing calling me back.

If you noticed the phone rings only 3 times, it's a automated calls to check on ya.. probably a LIFE-CALL monitor system.. if you lived in senior apts or handicapped housing faculities..

Simply if you see Out Of Area on caller id, just pick and hang up or yell on them "call your fking phone company get FULL information on caller id box" then hang up and nothing worry about it..

i got a beige box in my car, wanna see it?

I was also going to suggest that its something similar to the LIFE-CALL system. I know a few families that can't use their phones at certain times late night because of things like it. Seems to mysteriously go out and come back almost the same as you described above.
