Default Question on Certs

I have my MCP... was considering the full MCSE, but it's microsoft and it's a lot of money.

so, i was talking to a programmer buddy of mine who's opinion is that Sun's certification is really the only one out there that is worth getting as it is intense, informative and isn't dime-a-dozen (as are A+, Network+, MCP, MCSE, etc., etc.)

For those that haven't heard of it, Sun's cert involves an intense weekend of in-depth lectures followed by an exam. It is extremely pricey, however. I can't remember exactly and don't feel like looking it up right now, but I think it's around $4500.

Anyway, just curious on others' thoughts regarding industry certs out there today and their innate value or lack thereof.

Speak up.

This is kinda of a repost from another similar thread...

The Sun certs may be the only good ones, but what if you get it and your employer, doesn't use Sun's operating system? I don't mean to tell you that it isn't good, but my thoughts on certs, is get them only if you need them.

It all depends on where you want to work. What do you want to do? Do you want to work with the hardware or software? For example, I wanted to be a network installer. I didn't like working with software, but I liked to trouble-shoot the hardware, and install/build systems. I only have my A+, but my employer is going to pay for me to get my Cisco certs, cause they only run Cisco equipment.

MCSE are good cause it's kind of a defacto standard for employers now adays. Sun is pretty good too, since there becoming more and more popular. I'm not sure if there are any linux certs, but I've been reading more and more about the value of knowing how to run it in employers eyes....

/sry for the rant.
