Insta-boot in forseeable future?:
IBM and Infineon have announced MRAM could enter mass production as early as 2005. Magnetic RAM would allow a computer to boot instantly, as all the data would not need to be reloaded into memory as it could be stored there after electricity stops flowing. I'm a bit skeptical though. I remember reading this technology about 5 or 6 years ago. CNN's Article

Split Zip:
ZIP compression will be getting new features like real encryption and two incompatible variations! PKWare is apparently holding back from WinZIP on its new implementation of the ZIP format, so WinZIP will make their own.

Progress Means Fewer Features at least in the DVR market.

It serves the same purpose as mechanical RAM. Mechanical RAM is more stable, but far slower by comparison. The thing about mechanical RAM is that it can be introduced in the form of Nanotubes, allowing for it to be potentially faster than anything we have right now. That's what I'm waiting for. And the thing with this technology is that Nanotubes are being hyped so much that it will be forced into use in the next decade.
