ATI 8500LE 128ddr problems

I recently bought a DVD player, made from a very respectable brand. It produces DVD vvery nicely, but when the closed captioning option is on, the otherwise clear and pristine DVD picture-video becomes a nightmare. It fades from light to dark (with each line of closed captioned text). Apparently, ATI has been working on this issue for many months now, and it is getting frustrating. Does anyone know a solution to this problem??? (Getting a new video card is not a preferred option.)

ps- If the quickest solution is a newer video card, which one (for awesome gaming and video)? Please don't mention an ATI.
