I'm new to OCing

hey i'm fairly new to building computers...i built my second last year.
I do not know how to OC, its hard to figure out especially with the mobo i have...I'm no genius when it comes to hardware...plz help. I would like to oc the cpu for best performance.

these are my system specs:

Gigabyte knnxp pro
Amd 64 3200+ clawhammer core (754)
2x corsair XMS 512mb pc3200
2x WD raptors 36gigs
Seagate barracuda 120 gig
hitachi deskstar 160 gig
evga geforce 5700fx 128mb (ordered a gigabyte 6800 ultra)
and just got an x-connect 500w psu

That seems to be a very nice system. What type of performance are you looking to get out of it (gaming or office suite, for example)?

When you press the power button to your computer, press DEL immediately. Go to the Frequency/Voltage Control menu. Increase your CPU and AGP speeds in small increments, but only do one at a time. Use your system with demanding software, such as gaming, to test for system stability. Increase voltage to increase stability. Both the speed and voltage increases will raise the temperatures of the processor, the video card core, RAM, and overall system temperature.

yeah, thanks. its pretty fast compared to every1's comp i know lol. I want it set up for gaming...i have doom 3 and far cry but my machine bottlenecks mostly cause of the video card. I can't wait to get that 6800 ultra, I've been waiting a long time. I understand that if i oc it voids warranty. Are you familiar with the bios on my mobo? its default frequency is 200. So i increase it to 201 and kepp going up slowly...until i see good performance increase? I understand that some...but on the voltage issue I'm lost....any ideas? Thanks for the help. appreciate it.

DO NOT CHANGE THE AGP SPEED!!!!!!!!!! you want it locked at 66mhz if possible. If you change AGP then you can kill the stability of your OC

I wasn't planning on changing the agp voltage...I've heard that can really screw up your port. Thanks for the advice though. I just want to get my cpu OCed for now. The only options I have on board though are voltage and the 200mhz default setting...and my cpu reads at 2.01ghz

On Gigabyte motherboards, you have to hit ctrl-f1 after you enter the BIOS to get the overclocking options.

ok, any ideas on what i should take my voltage to and at what speed?

the first one is the one you want to change. Beware however, that if you can't boot because of a change that you make, you will have to reset the bios unless your mobo has a special feature that does it for you (thank god mine does)

ok I took it up to 205 in steps of course lol. although now my mouse seems a little glitchy....what should i do now? and my temp is about 43 C

yeah my mobo has a reset...its got dual bios also which is handy


update: ok I did have it OCed with no probs at 2.2ghz a 200mhz jump...its late I can't remember the voltage, but my comp got hot so i turned it down to 140 for now and volt at 1.550 ...I'll have to look into water cooling....does that look good?
