Default RTF font embedding

I've embedded a "special" font at home into a RTF file and then brought it to school to edit and print. Apparently, the font showed up at school and I could print it out. I really don't think the school's pc had the font installed. And I've heard some people say that such embedded fonts only work if the computer has the font installed, otherwise, it will use the best matching font much like web pages. So I'm curious, if I embed a font into an RTF file, will it stay in the file or does the computer typically need the font installed? I know embeded graphics always show up.

How did you embed the font in the file?
