Default Stealing AIM accounts...
I was talking to a friend online the other day and he claim that you can steal someones AIM account with some program if their username is 10 or fewer characters.  Does anyone know the validity of this?  And, how can you get it back if someone has stolen the account?

i have heard about that too, and it is most likely true, because it is the most popular way to hack hotmail effectively. and they have tight security. but it would require a lot of resources on the comp, speed and ram, and would start causing you a slow down so you could notice it before damage is done.

This is probally some true and false. Several very serious security problems with AIM were fixed with release 4.3.2229. If you have an earlier version visit AOL and download the latest version.
In some chat rooms you can type in Whois Name and then it'll show you on screen that person's IP address.
This would get him to your server, then on the server someone could get your user /password/ etc, but he couldn't get to your machine----IF Your firewall is working. If its not and you had 'sharing enabled' your files are vulnerable.
Everyone should use firewalls.

Geez way to let all those AIM users out there (including me) know what there using.  But my screename is longer than 10 characters, but does that necessarily mean that i am safe...or not?!?!

Tell me what's truly safe when connecting to the outside world and I'll answer your question  :

A O Hell has always been a bait pool for the less fortunate and not so bright. It's a field day for those that want to play.

Since the beginning there were guys taking peoples screen names and bumping them offline and then using their account. Not much has changed since then. You could even download software to do it to them.

Is there really anything "safe" out there. If someone wants in bad enough they will.
