I mean the cause is good and all, and then Linus gets all the credit (even though its based on unix, which shouldn't be governed like this).

sorry to bring this to an unsuspecting thread but its been on my mind :P

the GNU license is about protecting your IP while promoting openness

also, unix was basically proprietry, linux is based on a unix clone minix which was open source, thats the codebase which linus used to start on linux

he gets credit for starting linux, and for maintaining it, but there are many other people who get credit for helping with linux, every "project" has to have some kind of figurehead which people know

I realize its about open source, and thats really awesome thats not why I have a problem with the GNU license.

But its "his" you cannot change and release new kernels without asking him and getting permission from him. Also he always gets the credit for any changes to actual linux from whenever it was made until Linus dies, and probably beyond. Even if you are the coder that comes out with some ingenious new thing in the kernel, Linus owns it.

I would say that there are better applications available for PC than there are for Macintosh, but the software that Apple offers for free with its operating systems is better than the software Windows offers with its. Granted, I've never tried to use Window MovieMaker, or use Windows Media Player to transfer music to a device, but I've used iMovie, and found it to be moderately nice, and I've heard iTunes is pretty nice (and yes, I know these aren't the only applications included, but they're two examples).

yeah good thing is they standarize things better

one good example is NVIDIA's unified driver
its easy and not messy yet does a great job

and thats what Apple was aiming for
as for windows...
flying all over the place

although i still like the freedom to choose which airplane to fly in...
yet getting the good speed and luxury, and cheap (free)

so linux is great
kinda a mixture of philosophy of Apple and a dash of accessibility from Microsoft

afaik you can modify the linux kernel... and release it, but you can't call it the linux kernel, you would have to call it something else, it would be a fork, and you would have to include credit and copyright (or left or whatever) crap giving credit for what parts you didn't do

however im not a legal export nor an expert on the GPL.. i've read it a few times, but like any legal document does anyone _really_ understand what it means?

no but i've broken down what i understand from what i hear and parts that made sense... and essentially that if you do change the kernel you cannot release it with your ownership.
