My shrink pointed this out to me a while ago, that people these days, when asked what they want (in general, or for specific instances), list things that aren't actually what they really want, but what they think is reasonable, or more polite to say.  It's some weird societal effect.  It's kind of weird though, that people dumb down their wishes all the time, and usually don't even realize it.
