Ipconfig fails in XP

had the same problem with ipconfig but after trying some of the suggestion from this post, I found out my "Routing and Remote Access" (Services) was disabled. Once I set it to automatic and start the service, the ipconfig finally start working.

I'm using a IBM thinkpad t42...

Had the same problem. Try starting these services:

Remote procedure call (RPC)
Routing and Remote Access

Started them and voila -- ipconfig works.

netsh int ip show ipaddress had a more informative error message.

Same laptop as well - IBM TP42. Wonder if there was something from IBM that broke it?

Also, wondering if this service is normally auto in XP default configuration?

Please advise what to do. Owing to this, I could connect using a dial-up connection but was not able to browse any sites, then I thought maybe the dial up is messed up, so I bought hi-speed cable internet, same problem, wouldn't connect. Then I popped the Windows XP Pro CD in the drive and tried a "Repair Install" so that it could replace any missing or corrupt files, still no luck. I had to then nuke the PC, format the HDD with NTFS, and then install XP over it, now finally the internet is working however, I still get the same error message when I type ipconfig on the dos prompt...its driving me nuts!! ]

An issue that you might come across related to the IBM T42 Series Laptops and Wireless Home Networks.

Basically, while trouble shooting a problem related to:
- A Wireless Network.
- A Wired Network where the data jack might not be active.
- A VPN connection problem.

You may notice strange behavior from the Laptop Network Card.


Symptoms of the problem:
#1 ipconfig command gives the following error.
Windows IP Configuration

An internal error occurred: A device attached to the system is not functioning.

Please contact Microsoft Product Support Services for further help.

Additional information: Unknown media status code.


#2 NIC card gets Automatically Disabled within 30 seconds of unplugging a live cable. You also cannot enable the NIC card again without pugging in a cable into a live data jack.
(Normally, it should only show "cable unplugged" or "Not connected". It should not be automatically disabling the NIC cards.)


Cause:
The Ethernet Network Card Driver may be too new. The Nic driver that is available through the Windows Update website appears to not be compatible with the IBM Thinkpad T42 Series laptops.
(It may be other laptops also, but it appears from the newsgroups, that most people having the same issue, all use the IBM T42 series laptops with WinXP-SP2)


Solution:
#1
- Use the WinXP Rollback Driver feature to rollback to an earlier version.
- Then do not install the Nic card driver that is available through Windows Update until their driver problem is corrected.

#2
- Download the newest version of the driver from IBM's website.
(IBM has an older version than the Microsoft site, but IBM is more likely to have fully tested any version they offer on their website.)

I am getting this problem on a PC but when I login in Safe Mode it works fine, the ony thing I did recently was add Panda Platnum and it seemed to work fine until I ran a few reboots after clearing out a number of viruses

guys i hope someone here can help. tried all that solutions i can find here. but still my ICS/Firewall wont start. i cant even do an IPCONFIG
it displays:
error 2001: the specified driver is invalid.

which driver is he talking about? this pops when i run Win Firewall/ICS at services.msc

Appreciate your help. Iv been using this machine as a gateway for the whole house. i hope you guys can help me. Thanks

when i go to run ipconfig, the dos window flashes momentarily on the screen, with the information i expect, but then it disappears. It flashes too quick for me to get any info from it. Does anyone know what to do with that?

Cause:
I suspect you are going to the Run command and typing ipconfig, then pressing ENTER. The program runs through completion (which is very quick) then returns that it is done; since the command window is open only for that program, it closes.

Solution:
What you need to do is go to the Run command. Type command.com and press ENTER. Then type ipconfig and press ENTER.

I could not work it out after several days, and replacing the NIC so I formatted the system 30 days ago.

All was well until it happened again!!!!


I Was VERY Hesitant to delete anything from my System32\Drivers folder, but after reboot - It worked just fine -

Beets the heck out of formatting again.

I am having the same issue as Bonanzaman....when I run the ipconfig command, all I get back is a single line : Windows IP Configuration, no DNS or IP info at all.

netsh int ip show ipaddress lists a single "Loopback" interface.

route print consistently shows Loopback interface and a single route to 127.0.0.0 network.

pinging 127.0.0.1 works fine.

Tried all resets, uninstalls, reinstalls. Nothing helps.

There is one workaround I was able to find. Go to a Safe Mode, uninstall any Network Adapter, reboot into Normal Mode and everything is dandy until the next reboot.

The problem started manifesting itself about a year ago.

System details:
