9.2 Million Pixels in a 22.2-inch Flat Panel Monitor
Most of us would be happy with a decent hi-res 21-inch flat panel display that would be easy on the eyes and make a little more room on our desks without costing an arm and a leg. Unfortunately, as with CRTs, the little 15-17-inchers always drop in price first, and anything bigger is exponentially more expensive. It has a bit to do with supply and demand, but probably has more to do with the fact that the vendors figure that the big daddy monitors are only going to be used in professional apps (read: corporate purchases). Well, leaving behind that little moaning tirade about being stuck with a great big CRT and no desk space, it looks like IBM’s new T220 really is designed for professional apps. This monster shows 12 times more detail than most monitors. It displays 200 pixels per inch and more than 9 million pixels total on its 22.2-inch screen. It can also show multiple high-definition HDTV channels simultaneously. IBM thinks that the monitor could be used for medical imaging, finance (so financial folks can get by with fewer monitors), design, and other high-end apps. The T220 will be available in limited quantities this month and will be in full-scale production beginning in Q3. The starting price for the new monitor is (gulp) $22,000—as in “twenty-two thousand dollars” (just to let you know it’s not a typo).
