Default Major TAR issues

a friend of mine just DLed a 1.39 gig file - some of you likely know what it is - and its Tar. ok. i extracted it for him into 100 smaller Rar files and scanned them, reporting all perfect. however, when i try to extract them, i get bad block errors. i feel i gotta be doin somethin wrong. any body else know what im talking about or how to fix it?he said its from IRC.

on seperate note - anybody here played hl2 yet?

I don't have it, but played it (the pre release alpha) at a friends housea while back. I only played the e3 levels so it wouldn't spoil the other parts of the game for me. Its was fun though... the physics are awesome.
