SilenX Power Supply

Review by Jason Jacobs on 12.01.03
Power Supply Provided by SilenX Corporation Base Price: $89.95

A word about noise:

The SilenX 400W PSU was hot-wired with the two pins on the motherboard connector that lead to the power switch wired together. This was so that the PSU could be tested aside from a working system when the plug was connected to the PSU. Techwarelabs does not recommend that you do this at home unless you are an electrician and have taken the proper precautions.

Once the PSU was plugged into the wall it turned on as expected allowing for the chance to see how silent it really was. At first a problem was suspected with the PSU since all we heard was nothing. Upon closer inspection a low buzz could be heard from apoximately one foot away. Further than that it might be suspected you heard nothing at all. When the power supply was checked first hand it was found that the fan at the rear moved a decent amount of air and was actually turning. For those with 400w to 500w screamers this might be a welcome change.

Conclusions:

If you are in the market to build yourself a nearly silent system that also requires the power output for some of the higher end systems, this is the way to go. This power supply would also be ideal for the growing number of people that wish to construct a HTPC (Home Theatre Personal Computer) and dont want the power supply noise interupting the movies they will watch.

The SilenX 400W power supply lives up to the claims of its silence and performs admirably in systems under load. Its definitely a strong competitor in the power supply market with an silent advantage that most other supplies cannot currently compete with.
