Hitachi CML152 15" LCD Monitor

Review by Harry Lam on 08.29.03
Monitor provided by Monitors Direct/Hitachi, Price: $315.00

Quality:

Dead Pixels:

There are three types of defective pixels.  Type 1 and 2 defective pixels are where a specific pixel stays always on or always off, respectively.  A Type 3 defective pixel is when one of the component sub pixels (red, green, or blue) is defective (either on or off), resulting in the pixel being unable to display a certain color.

As stated previously there were no dead or defective pixels of any kind that were detectable on the CML152. Hitachi has evidently put work into the build quality of even their low end LCD's and by doing so has shown that their customers are important to them.

If you're still interested in the topic of dead pixels, Tom's Hardware has an interesting write-up on the topic.

Ghosting:

LCDs refresh on a per pixel basis, and ghosting is the effect that is created when pixels can not refresh in time (due to their high response times).  LCDs on a general basis suffer from this problem, but as LCD technology evolves, this will become less and less of a problem.

The CML152's picture quality could be improved as significant amounts of ghosting was present in specific games, (like Quake 3 Arena and Warcraft III).  The ghosting was relatively minimal in slower paced games like Battlefield 1942.  I could not detect any ghosting at all during movie playback (even during fast paced scenes). Gamers may want to check out Hitachi's higher end models if 3D gaming is an important quality to them.

Viewing Angle:

The viewing angle is absolutely awesome, almost rivaling that of a regular CRT monitor.  This was probably the biggest individual strength of the CML152.  During extensive testing, I used this LCD for the management of a server during which much time was spent in front of its screen, the lessening of eye strain and viewing angle were definitely noticable.

Conclusion:

The Hitachi CML152 LCD monitor is a good entry level LCD monitor for the workstation or desktop casual computer user.  The large viewing angle and excellent manufacturing quality make it a good choice for productivity minded.  However, as with most LCD monitors, the gaming experience suffers due to the ghosting exhibited when rendering high motion scenes.

Pros:
-Integrated AC adaptor
-Very high viewing angle
-Compact, and space efficient
-High manufacturing quality

Cons:
-High rate of ghosting
-Base seems a bit oddly designed, and takes up more space than it should
