Issues Encountered:

When you update the Mio C520 maps or software you are re-writing the onboard flash memory. While this feature works just fine, you will find that if you store contacts, video's, MP3's, or photo's in the volitile memory and you run our of battery power all of this is gone. Thats right . . . Gone! The first time it happened to us we searched in vain for the contacts and information all the time realizing that this is a drawback of the volitile memory and we should have expected this to occur. Without power this data ceases to exist. The point: Keep the C520 charged when you can, and especially if you have a preplanned route or contacts programmed in. You don't want to stop to enjoy the Grand Canyon for 5 hours on your way from NY to California and forget to turn off the C520 only to find that your route to Grandma's house in LA is gone.

Speaking of battery life the C520 in our tests got very close to the advertised battery life of 4.5 hours. We managed to squeeze 4 hours 20 minutes from the C520 utilizing its power saving mode and medium screen brightness.

C520 Highlights:

Our C520 loaded the Miomap software and was operational in 15 seconds after pushing the power button which is remarkable considering all of the functionality this device is loading. Additionally the C520 was able to acquire satallite signals and lock in on our location less than a minute each time we used it. Indoors the C520's ability to lock onto satelittes is much diminished. With the ability to lock onto up to 12 different satelittes the C520 presents you with very precise location and speed information. While the process of entering address or destination information could use some refining it always worked.

In route recalculation is another excellent feature of the C520. If you miss your turn or exit have no fear as the C520 dynamically recalculates your route and presents you with a new path. You can also designate locations as favorites which can come in handy finding your way back home once you reach your destination in unfamiliar territory.
