AMD Athlon 64

Application Performance

In terms of real application performance, TWL demonstrates actual application performance as opposed to Generic benchmarks which often provide general performance but not real life gains. All tests were done under default settings with Cool 'N' Quiet enabled, this will lead to slightly lower scores but much more applicable results.

Applications Tested:

  1. Microsoft Office
  2. Adobe Photoshop 7
  3. ID Games Quake 3
  4. Eagle Dynamics Lock On
  5. Wolfenstein - Enemy Territory

The systems used in all testing in this review had the following specifications:

Intel System
  • Processor: Intel P4 Prescott
  • Motherboard: IC7G-Max
  • RAM: 1GB Crucial PC3200
  • HDD: Western Digital WD800JB
  • OS: Windows XP SP1 + DirectX 9b
AMD System
  • Processor: AMD XP 3800+
  • Motherboard: Asus A8V Delux
  • RAM: 1GB Corsair PC3200
  • HDD: Western Digital WD800JB
  • OS: Windows XP SP1 + DirectX 9b

Applications were chosen to demonstrate performance in commonly used applications and 3D games. Results were as follows:

1. Microsoft Office Access- Opening a 100MB Database.

CPU
Time
Intel Pentium 4 3.0 Ghz
6.5 seconds
AMD Athlon 64 3800+, 2.4 Ghz
5.0 seconds

2. Microsoft Office Word- Opening a 10MB Word Document

CPU
Time
Intel Pentium 4 3.0 Ghz
3 seconds
AMD Athlon 64 3800+, 2.4 Ghz
2.5 seconds

3. Microsoft Office Power Point- Opening a 10 MB Power Point Presentation
CPU
Time
Intel Pentium 4 3.0 Ghz
6 seconds
AMD Athlon 64 3800+, 2.4 Ghz
6.2 seconds

4. Adobe Photoshop 7- Opening a 10MB JPEG

CPU
Time
Intel Pentium 4 3.0 Ghz
7 seconds
AMD Athlon 64 3800+, 2.4 Ghz
5 seconds

In 3 out of 4 applications the AMD 3800+ was faster. In the Power Point Application with large graphic files the speed is nearly the same with the AMD losing by only .2 seconds.

3D Gaming Performance

Quake 3

Quake 3 is a Direct X 8 engine game but it has become a good cpu benchmark over the last two years. TWL was pleasantly surprised with the results show at right. Interestingly TWL was forced to uncap the fps in the configuration file 5 times to reach the limit of the cpu/video card. Tests were done at 1280 x 1024 and the screen shots later resized. Anyone notice the 1000fps? This is the limit of the game engine which will not exceed 1000fps. For reference the Pentium 4 3.0 managed a meager 738 fps at 1280 x 1024 looking at complete black.
