Seagate Momentus 7200.2 Laptop Hard Drive
Specifications:
A look at the specifications for the Momentus 7200.2 shows that its not your typical laptop drive. Aside from the fact that its spinning at 7200 RPM the drive sports 16MB of cache and boasts a very low read seek time of 11.0 ms. As per our initial guess this hard drive is indeed targeted towards the performance mobile market. You might expect to see these drives in 17" gaming laptops but actually this drive will probably not come standard and instead be offered as an upgrade. It is interesting to see that Seagate has actually mentioned that this drive may be appropriate for small-form-factor servers and blade servers, though with the disclaimer of being non-mission-critical. We suspect this is due to the fact tthat they already have a line of hard drives dedicated to the enterprise and server market for which this drive might pose some competition. With it's low failure rate, high speed, and small form factor this drive might be perfect for the small office server seeking to increase their density without the penalty of a large increase in footprint. At 7200 RPM, 16MB of cache, and a 5 year warrenty this hard drive will probably be a considerable upgrade both in terms of price and more importantly performance. We will test the Momentus 7200.2 for several of its key factors shown to the right in addition to its battery consumption when compared to a 5400 rpm drive and its boot time.
