About Left 4 Dead:

Left 4 Dead is a co-operative, survival horror, first-person shooter video game. It was developed by Turtle Rock Studios, which was purchased by the Valve Corporation part-way into development. The game uses the Source engine, and is available for Windows and the Xbox 360.

The game pits four Survivors of an apocalyptic pandemic against hordes of aggressive infected. There are three game modes: a single player mode in which allied characters are controlled by AI; a four-player, co-op Campaign mode; and an eight-player Versus mode. In all modes, an AI, dubbed "The Director", controls level pacing and item spawns, in an attempt to create a dynamic experience and increase replay value.

To benchmark Left 4 Dead, we used good ol' fashioned FRAPS. Left 4 Dead was benchmarked using 3 resolutions, as well as no AA, 2xAA, 4xAA, 8xAA, and 4x Aniso.

A graphical representation of these results is provided below. Unfortunately, Valve disabled the fps _max command variable, which limits our FPS to 62. This skews the data a bit, but it is the same performance you will experience on your machine.

We can see here that game play is fantastic for all settings used. We see a strange performance dip for the 1680x1050 w/ 8xAA setting, though it is still ~50 FPS...very playable.

Bottom Line: The Gigabyte 512MB 9800GT can play Left 4 Dead on any setting and any resolution with ease.
